Winds howled, waves buffeted, and the ship rolled at sea. The Apostle Paul, on his way to Rome to witness to Christ and be martyred, was in true danger of dying at sea instead. Acts chapter 27 recounts his harrowing journey, and tucked in those verses are lessons for us as we navigate our own stormy seas.

If life is a sailing voyage, it’s wonderful when the seas are calm. We have our health, things are going well at work, and our family relationships are at peace. I love those days—the sun is shining, the water is crystalline blue, and gentle breezes drive away the humidity.

But we don’t always sail on glassy seas. Storms come. They are inevitable. Sometimes storms are in the natural realm, and tangible property is lost to winds, floods, or fire. The soul may also be pounded by grief, depression, or fear. And let’s not forget the role of the Enemy of our souls, who “prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8).

Jesus endured storms of every kind. So will we—but we do not do so alone. Christ promised his presence and power in the midst of life’s storms. God instructed, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God” (Isaiah 41:10a).

Paul’s story should encourage us when we fear shipwreck. God’s purpose for the apostle’s life would be accomplished, no matter what opposed him. Even when death loomed on the horizon, Paul trusted God and was saved.

When your boat seems about to sink, remember God’s promise: “I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10b). I’m so thankful God is my life raft, aren’t you? If the waves are rocking your world, hang on! You’re safe with him.

Sailing too,
